Perplexity: our take
Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web and gives answers with cited sources. Strengths: citations make it easy to check facts, which is great for research and quick lookups. Weaknesses: we couldn't verify current pricing (the site blocked our automated check), and answers are only as good as the sources it finds, so click through on anything important. Use it if you want a research-first alternative to Googling. Skip it if you mainly need creative writing or coding help.
NotebookLM: our take
NotebookLM, which Google now also brands as Gemini Notebook, is a research assistant grounded in the sources you upload. Strengths: summaries and note-taking tied to your own documents, which helps cut down on made-up answers, plus audio overviews. Weaknesses: it works best with documents you provide rather than open-ended questions, and we haven't verified current plan limits. Use it if you study, research or need to digest long PDFs and notes. Skip it if you want a general chatbot for everything.
