OpenAI Codex review (2026)
Last updated .
Our verdict
Codex is OpenAI's coding agent, available as an app, in the CLI, in your IDE and in the cloud. Strengths: it's the cheapest way into a top-tier coding agent, with limited free access and fuller use bundled into ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo). If you already pay for ChatGPT, you already have it. Weaknesses: free access is limited and depends on rollout, and heavy users will hit usage limits or need pricier plans. Use it if you're new to vibe coding or already in the ChatGPT ecosystem. Skip it if you want everything inside one dedicated editor; Cursor may suit you better.
